What is Futures & Options (F&O)?

Derivatives are financial instruments that track the price of an underlying asset β€” an index like Nifty or Banknifty, a stock like Reliance or Infosys, or a commodity. In India, two types dominate: Futures β€” a legally binding agreement to buy or sell the underlying at a set price on a future date, and Options β€” contracts that give you the right (but not the obligation) to buy (Call) or sell (Put) at a specific strike price before expiry. F&O markets trade on the NSE in weekly and monthly expiry cycles. They are used by traders to speculate on price direction, by investors to hedge existing stock portfolios, and by experienced participants to earn regular premium income through option-selling strategies.

How It Works

1

Activate the Derivatives Segment

Submit a one-page income proof (salary slip, ITR, or bank statement) along with the F&O risk disclosure acknowledgement. Indexis processes your activation request through Motilal Oswal β€” typically completed within one working day.

2

Understand Contract Specifications

Every F&O contract has a fixed lot size. Nifty = 75 units, Banknifty = 15 units, and individual stocks vary. You only need to block a fraction of the total contract value as margin β€” making derivatives capital-efficient but also inherently leveraged.

3

Study the Option Chain

The option chain shows all available strike prices for a given expiry, with real-time data on Open Interest (OI), Volume, Implied Volatility (IV), and the Greeks β€” Delta, Theta, Gamma, and Vega. Reading the option chain correctly is the foundation of good derivatives trading.

4

Choose Your Strategy

Match your strategy to your market outlook. Bullish? Buy a Call or sell a Put. Bearish? Buy a Put or sell a Call. Range-bound market? Consider an Iron Condor or Short Straddle. Our advisors at Indexis help you select strategies appropriate to your risk appetite and capital.

5

Manage Risk and Close Your Position

Always define your maximum loss before entering a trade. Use stop-loss orders. Monitor positions closely β€” especially near expiry when time decay (Theta) accelerates. Exit or roll over positions before settlement to avoid physical delivery obligations on stock options.
